What is thermoplastic?
Thermoplastic is a 100% solid material used for long life and extreme duty markings. You will see thermoplastic used on roadway crosswalks, arrows, stop bars and other detail markings. Thermoplastic will last approximately 6-8 times longer than regular traffic paint. Thermoplastic contains glass beads within the material and applied to the surface of material for reflectivity. We use all DELDOT approved materials.
Types of thermoplastic:
Preformed thermoplastic is a thermoplastic that comes in premade sheets which is subsequently torched onto the roadway where it forms a bond with the asphalt or concrete (concrete requires additional binding agent).
- We primarily use Ennis Flint PreMark preformed thermoplastic, which contains “Vizigrip.” Vizigrip is an anti skid material added to the surface of thermoplastic for added grip.
Pros
- Will not crack
- Very crisp clean lines
- Vizigrip – added grip and reflectivity
- Can be applied in any temperature
Cons
- More expensive than hot applied thermoplastic
Hot applied thermoplastic comes in 50 pounds bags and is heated to 425 degrees where it turns to a liquid and is applied to the surface using a walk behind machine. Glass beads are added to the surface of hot applied thermoplastic for reflectivity.
Pros
- Much cheaper than preformed thermoplastic
- Very reflective
Cons
- Must be at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit to apply
- Can crack over time
New Parking Lot Layouts

Sealcoating and Crack Filling
Sealcoating is an important part of any asphalt maintenance process. Over time, asphalt is susceptible to damage due to the changing of the weather and the oxidation from the sun. During this, water penetrates the surface ultimately damaging the asphalt. Sealcoating not only makes your driveway/parking lot look new, it protects it from oxidation as well as petroleum spills.
Sealcoating is an inexpensive way to extend the life of your asphalt and will protect your investment. It will also improve the curb appeal of your property. First State Striping recommends sealcoating any newly installed asphalt project ONE year after the installation and every two to four years thereafter.
The first step in sealcoating is to prep the area by removing all dirt, debris and vegetation. This is done with commercial blowers, wire brushes and weed whackers. On residential sealcoating applications we will prime all oil spots and stains that are present on the driveway to ensure proper adherence. A “Tarconite” coal-tar based sealer manufactured by NEYRA Industries will be applied.
Crack Filling is an important part of any asphalt maintenance project and should not be avoided. Crack Filling is done to prevent water, dirt and debris from entering cracks and weakening the pavement’s sub-base, which leads to further damage. Any and all cracks should be filled as soon as they are visible as water that enters the sub-base can damage the asphalt.
The first step in Crack Filling is to clean all cracks of dirt, debris and vegetation using a KM Crack Jet Pro. This machine uses 90psi of forced hot air with temps up to 2800 degrees ultimately drying ALL moisture in seconds. It also blows cracks clean while etching the walls of the cracks/surface to ensure proper bond between the asphalt and rubber. A Crafco oil jacketed melter, which is heated to 400 degrees is then used to apply a NEYRA PLS or Thermoflex rubber into the cracks. Smaller cracks are sealed by using a direct fire GINGWAY MA10 gravity fed machine, which is pushed over the asphalt surface.
